Stropharia semiglobata, commonly known as the semi-globose stropharia, is a saprotrophic basidiomycete fungus found globally. While occasionally mistaken for a plant pathogen in agricultural settings due to its appearance on fertilized soils, it does not possess the biological mechanism to infect or harm living plant tissues.

This fungus is primarily a coprophile, meaning it thrives on dung and heavily enriched soils. In an agricultural context, its presence is a biological indicator of high organic matter content and potential excess nitrogen. It performs the vital ecological role of breaking down complex organic compounds into simpler forms, assisting in nutrient cycling within the soil.

Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of small, yellow-brown mushrooms with hemispherical caps. Unlike true diseases, there are no lesions, wilting, or necrotic spots on crops associated with this fungus. The mycological structure remains entirely confined to the decomposing organic layer on the soil surface.

Development is driven by environmental conditions such as high moisture levels and warm temperatures in high-organic substrates. Greenhouse environments often provide these conditions if organic fertilizers are applied in excess or if the composting process is incomplete, leading to localized patches of mycelial growth.

Management strategies focus on cultural practices rather than chemical intervention. Growers should ensure that all compost is fully matured before application and that soil drainage is sufficient to prevent excessive surface moisture. Simple mechanical removal of the fruiting bodies and improved soil aeration are usually enough to control their appearance, as fungicides are ineffective and unnecessary against this saprotrophic organism.
