Scaly Stropharia (lat. Stropharia squamosa) is a saprotrophic fungus that thrives on decaying organic material. It is crucial to clarify that this fungus is not a plant disease. Unlike parasitic fungi, it does not infect living plant tissues, nor does it cause necrotic or physiological damage to agricultural crops or garden plants.

The fungus acts as a decomposer, primarily targeting lignin and cellulose found in rotting wood and forest litter. Its biological cycle is restricted to the breakdown of dead biological matter. By converting complex organic structures into simpler nutrients, it plays a vital role in nutrient cycling, which ultimately benefits soil fertility in natural ecosystems.

The habitat of Stropharia squamosa is strictly limited to moist environments with significant organic debris, such as shaded forest floors, decaying logs, or thick mulch layers in horticultural settings. If the presence of fungal fruiting bodies is undesired, simple sanitation practices, such as removing old wood or over-mulched organic matter, will prevent further growth.
