The Strophariaceae family consists of basidiomycete fungi that, while primarily known as saprotrophs in natural ecosystems, can act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural and forest settings. These fungi specialize in wood decay, and under favorable conditions, they can colonize living trees that have been compromised by environmental stress or physical injuries.
The pathogens within this group, most notably from the Hypholoma and Pholiota genera, function by secreting enzymes that break down complex organic polymers such as lignin and cellulose. This process compromises the structural integrity of the host plant, effectively turning the heartwood into a medium for the fungus to thrive and produce its reproductive structures.
Affected crops include a wide range of fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and stone fruits, as well as various ornamental trees. Symptoms typically include the appearance of clusters of mushrooms on the tree trunk or base, accompanied by wood discoloration, internal cavities, and localized softening of the timber, which significantly weakens the tree's architecture.
The spread and development of these fungi are heavily influenced by humidity and the presence of exposed woody tissues. Spores are easily disseminated by wind, water splashes, and insects, landing on pruning wounds or bark fissures. High soil moisture and inadequate drainage also contribute to an environment where these fungi can gain a foothold on tree root systems or lower stems.
The damage caused by Strophariaceae is primarily economic, as affected trees become safety hazards and suffer from reduced productivity and longevity. Effective management focuses on cultural practices that minimize tree wounds, ensure rapid healing of cuts, and promote overall vigor. Sanitation is crucial, involving the prompt removal of infected wood and debris to minimize the fungal spore load in the orchard.
