Description
Important note: Suillus cavipes (Hollow Bolete) is not a plant disease. It is an edible mushroom belonging to the Suillaceae family, known for its obligate mycorrhizal association with larch trees. It is ecologically beneficial and is not classified as a pathogen in agronomy.
The fungus acts as a symbiotic partner rather than an infectious agent. Through mycorrhiza, the mycelium colonizes the root zone of larch trees, significantly increasing the root surface area for water and mineral uptake. In return, the tree provides the fungus with essential sugars produced via photosynthesis.
The primary host for Suillus cavipes is the larch (Larix). It is typically found in larch-dominated forests or in areas where larch has been planted for ornamental or forestry purposes. The fungus relies on the tree's presence to complete its biological cycle and develop fruit bodies.
Morphological symptoms include the development of a golden-brown or rusty-colored cap and a distinctive hollow stipe (stem), which is the most reliable identification feature. The underside of the cap exhibits large, radial, angular pores. The presence of these fruit bodies signals a healthy, functioning mycorrhizal network in the soil.
There is no economic damage associated with this fungus. It is a beneficial organism that supports forest health and tree vitality. Therefore, no phytosanitary measures or disease control practices are applicable to this species, as it contributes positively to the soil's biological diversity.
