Description
Suillus lakei, commonly known as Lake's Bolete, is a basidiomycete fungus that forms symbiotic relationships with coniferous trees. While occasionally confused with pathogenic fungal infections due to its proximity to tree trunks, it is not a plant disease but rather a vital mycorrhizal partner that enhances the health and vigor of its host trees.
The primary host for Suillus lakei is the larch tree (Larix). The fungus develops a mantle around the tree roots, effectively increasing the root surface area for nutrient uptake. In the context of forestry and nursery management, the presence of this fungus is considered beneficial, as it significantly improves the survival rate and growth speed of young larch seedlings in various soil types.
Symptoms of its presence are entirely restricted to the appearance of characteristic fruiting bodies in the soil near the host tree. The cap of the mushroom is often covered with reddish or brownish scales, which makes it distinct. These fruiting bodies do not damage the plant tissue and are purely the reproductive structures of the fungus, appearing during late summer and autumn seasons.
Environmental conditions conducive to the development of this fungus include well-drained, acidic forest soils and sufficient moisture levels. It thrives in temperate regions where coniferous species are dominant. The distribution of spores is mediated by wind and water, allowing the fungus to colonize new root systems of compatible tree species within forest stands.
From an agronomic perspective, there is no need for control measures against this fungus. It provides significant ecological advantages:

- Improved drought resistance for host trees.
- Enhanced resistance to soil-borne pathogens.
