Surirella is a genus of diatom algae that, while not a pathogenic fungus or bacteria, can pose significant challenges in hydroponic and aquaponic cultivation. These organisms possess silica-based cell walls, making them highly resilient to many environmental stressors and common agricultural chemicals.

The primary nature of the issue is biological competition and physical obstruction. By thriving in nutrient-rich solutions, Surirella colonies deplete essential nutrients and create dense mats on substrates or root surfaces. This behavior restricts gas exchange, effectively suffocating the plant's root system and disrupting nutrient uptake.

The most common crops affected include sensitive leafy greens, herbs, and vegetable seedlings grown in water-based systems. Greenhouse environments with improper shading of nutrient reservoirs or exposed channels are particularly susceptible, as the presence of light provides the energy required for these organisms to photosynthesize and multiply rapidly.

Signs of infestation include the appearance of brownish or golden-yellow slippery biofilms on growth media, such as rockwool or perlite, and along irrigation tubing. Once the algae mat covers the root zone, plants typically display symptoms of stunted development, marginal leaf chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens.

Prevention and control strategies must focus on light deprivation and rigorous system hygiene. It is essential to opaque all reservoirs, channels, and tubing to prevent light entry. Implementing periodic cleaning cycles with hydrogen peroxide or other approved agents, as well as installing UV sterilization equipment, ensures that Surirella populations remain below levels that would threaten crop yield and quality.
