Surirellaceae is a family of diatoms that, while not primary plant pathogens, are significant opportunistic organisms in hydroponic and aquaponic systems. In controlled environment agriculture, their proliferation creates complex bio-fouling issues that directly affect the physiological health of greenhouse crops.

The biological development of these diatoms is driven by the presence of mineral-rich nutrient solutions and light exposure. In hydroponic setups, they form dense biofilms on root systems, irrigation pipes, and drainage channels, essentially choking the root zone and preventing efficient nutrient uptake.

Common symptoms of heavy colonization include a distinct brownish, slimy layer on roots and equipment. Plants impacted by these diatoms exhibit reduced growth rates, general chlorosis, and wilting, as the film around the roots creates a physical barrier to oxygen exchange, often leading to physiological stress.

These organisms thrive when nutrient solutions are exposed to light and maintained at elevated temperatures. Stagnant zones in irrigation lines are especially vulnerable, as the high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus creates an optimal environment for rapid colonial growth of the algae.

Effective prevention strategies focus on system hygiene and environmental control. This includes strictly light-proofing all water reservoirs and piping, implementing ultraviolet sterilization for recirculating water, and performing periodic cleaning of irrigation lines to ensure the root zone remains free of algal buildup.
