Description

Surirellales is an order of diatomaceous algae that, while not acting as a traditional plant pathogen, poses a significant risk in hydroponic cultivation and recirculating irrigation systems. By forming dense films and colonies, these organisms create severe abiotic stress on crops, interfering with their physiological processes and root functionality.

The primary nature of this problem is the excessive overgrowth of algae on root systems and cultivation equipment. These diatoms thrive in environments rich in silica and inorganic minerals, which are commonly used in nutrient solutions. Their rapid expansion leads to the physical covering of root surfaces, severely inhibiting nutrient uptake and gas exchange between the roots and the water environment.

This issue primarily affects leafy greens, herbs, and seedlings grown in deep-water culture or nutrient film technique (NFT) systems. When Surirellales propagate, they alter the chemical composition of the nutrient solution and can lead to localized oxygen depletion, which weakens the plant and makes it highly susceptible to opportunistic pathogens.

Symptoms of this condition include the darkening of the nutrient solution and the appearance of a yellowish-brown, slimy coating on the root mass. Affected plants typically show signs of stunting, wilting despite adequate irrigation, and chlorosis. If left unmanaged, the root system begins to decay, leading to overall plant mortality and a decrease in crop quality.

Prevention and management strategies focus on strict sanitation and environmental control. Providing complete light exclusion to the nutrient reservoir and root zones is the most effective preventative measure. Operators should also implement UV filtration systems, maintain optimal water circulation, and utilize approved peroxide-based cleaning agents to eliminate algal biomass without damaging the crops.
