Description
Syncephalastraceae are a family of zygomycete fungi within the order Mucorales. While these fungi are primarily known as soil saprotrophs that decompose organic matter, some species, notably Syncephalastrum racemosum, can act as opportunistic pathogens. They primarily target plants that are already weakened or have suffered mechanical injury during harvest or storage.
The primary type of disease caused by this group is soft rot or mucormycosis. Once the fungus infiltrates plant tissue, it secretes potent hydrolytic enzymes that break down cell walls and middle lamellae. This process leads to the rapid disintegration of the affected plant material, turning it into a soft, amorphous mass.
A wide variety of agricultural crops can be affected, including vegetable crops, tubers, and fruits. The fungus is particularly hazardous in storage facilities where high humidity and inadequate ventilation provide an ideal environment for spore germination and rapid mycelial colonization, often causing total losses in affected batches of produce.
The diagnostic signs of infection include the development of localized water-soaked lesions that quickly expand. Shortly after the initial decay, the surface of the lesion becomes covered with a characteristic dark grey to black dusty coating, which represents the sporulating structures of the fungus. This fuzzy growth is often visible to the naked eye under high humidity.
Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and environmental control. Key preventive measures include minimizing mechanical wounding during harvest, maintaining optimal storage temperatures, and ensuring proper air circulation to keep surface moisture levels low.
