Syncephalastrum is a genus of zygomycete fungi that, while primarily known as saprotrophs, can act as opportunistic plant pathogens. The most recognized species in this context is Syncephalastrum racemosum. This fungus exists naturally in the soil and attacks plants primarily when their defense mechanisms are weakened by poor growth conditions or environmental stress.

This pathogen commonly targets a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops, especially those grown in controlled environments like greenhouses. It can affect various plant organs, but it is most destructive when it colonizes root systems or seedlings. When conditions are favorable, it can lead to rapid decay and significant loss of young plants, impacting the overall crop yield.

The primary symptoms of infection include the development of soft, water-soaked rot, which quickly turns into a mushy lesion. A characteristic grayish-brown, fuzzy mold often appears on the surface of the affected areas, indicating massive sporulation of the fungus. Infected plants usually exhibit rapid wilting and collapse, as the pathogen destroys the vascular tissues and root structure.

The development and spread of Syncephalastrum are heavily favored by high humidity and temperatures ranging between +25°C and +30°C. The fungus produces robust spores that can persist in the soil for extended periods. It can be easily spread through contaminated water, tools, or infected propagation material, making strict sanitation practices crucial to maintaining crop health.

To effectively prevent and control this disease, growers should implement a rigorous integrated pest management program:

  • Ensure proper sterilization of potting mixes and substrates.
  • Maintain optimal drainage to prevent waterlogging, which encourages rot.
  • Improve ventilation in greenhouses to lower ambient humidity.
  • Remove and destroy any infected plant debris to stop further sporulation.
  • Apply preventative fungicide treatments if the environment is conducive to disease outbreaks.
