While frequently identified as a saprophyte, it acts as an opportunistic pathogen that causes significant damage to seeds, grains, and fruits both during their growth and within the post-harvest storage environment.
The host range for this fungus is diverse, encompassing essential agricultural commodities such as peanuts, soybeans, sunflowers, and various horticultural crops. The pathogen typically gains entry to the plant tissues via small wounds, punctures from insects, or mechanical bruises sustained during harvest operations, which serve as an entry point for its mycelial growth.
Symptoms of infection are characterized by the rapid development of a dense, fluffy grey-to-black fungal mat covering the affected tissue. As the fungus consumes nutrients from the host, the infected parts become watery, mushy, and necrotic. This breakdown often leads to rapid decay and the emission of volatile organic compounds, signaling advanced degradation.
