Synchytrium edgertonii is an obligate parasitic fungus within the Chytridiomycota division. This pathogen is known for its ability to induce cellular transformation in host plants, leading to the formation of galls and hypertrophic lesions. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host tissues to complete its complex biological life cycle.
The primary host for this species is Barbarea vulgaris, commonly known as garden yellowrocket or bittercress. Due to its host specificity, the fungus is often studied in ecological contexts regarding the natural control of wild cruciferous weeds, which can compete with agricultural crops for nutrients and space.
The disease manifests as small, distinct pustules or galls appearing on the stems, petioles, and leaves of the infected host. These structures are effectively specialized tissues where the fungus produces its zoosporangia. Severe infections lead to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and morphological distortion of the affected plant parts.
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of pathogen dispersal. The motility of zoospores requires a film of liquid water, making periods of high humidity and rainfall optimal for infection spread. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions in the soil as resting spores, which are highly resistant to desiccation and can persist for several seasons.
Management strategies for this pathogen focus on breaking the infection cycle through integrated practices:
- systematic removal and destruction of weed hosts, particularly Barbarea species;
