Synchytrium macrosporum is an obligate parasitic fungus within the Chytridiomycota phylum. Unlike the well-known potato wart pathogen, this species has a very broad host range, infecting a wide variety of dicotyledonous plants by stimulating the host cells to enlarge and divide, ultimately forming gall-like structures on the surface of plant organs.

The pathogen primarily affects the aerial parts of plants, including leaves, petioles, and stems. The infection cycle begins when motile zoospores settle on the host epidermis, penetrate the tissue, and trigger the formation of hyperplastic galls. Because of its wide host range, it is considered a significant threat to botanical diversity in both wild and cultivated habitats.

Symptoms are easily identifiable as distinct, wart-like growths that can appear in clusters. These galls disrupt the normal physiology of the host, leading to stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced photosynthetic efficiency. In severe cases, the affected organs may wither and die prematurely due to the disruption of vascular tissues.

The development and spread of Synchytrium macrosporum are heavily dependent on moisture. Zoospores require water films to swim and reach new infection sites on the host plants. Consequently, high humidity levels and poorly drained soils are the primary environmental drivers that facilitate the rapid spread of the disease within a garden or a field.

Effective management strategies focus on hygiene and physical removal. Recommendations include:

  • Removing and destroying all symptomatic plants and associated soil.
  • Practicing strict crop rotation to interrupt the parasite's life cycle.
  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to limit the availability of free moisture.
  • Controlling alternative weed hosts that may serve as reservoirs for the pathogen.
