Description

The disease is caused by the obligate parasitic fungus Synchytrium nigrescens, which belongs to the Chytridiomycetes class. This pathogen is a specific parasite that primarily targets the tissues of various plantain species (Plantago genus). It alters the plant's cellular metabolism, leading to the development of characteristic galls and hypertrophy within the host tissues.

The host range of Synchytrium nigrescens is mainly focused on the Plantago genus. The fungus invades the epidermal cells, triggering an abnormal proliferation of host cells. This process results in the formation of visible, wart-like outgrowths on the stems, petioles, and leaf surfaces, which serve as the primary site for the fungal life cycle and spore development.

The main symptoms of the infection are small, yellowish to brown galls that appear on the green parts of the plant. As the fungus matures, these structures may darken. In severe cases, the entire surface of the plant can become heavily deformed, which significantly inhibits the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and reduces its overall vigor.

Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moisture, are essential for the survival and spread of the pathogen. The fungus produces zoospores that require a film of water to swim from the source of infection to healthy plant tissues. These spores are highly persistent and can survive in the soil or decaying organic matter for extended periods, waiting for optimal conditions to re-infect host plants.
