Description
The pathogen Synchytrium psophocarpi is a parasitic fungus belonging to the Chytridiomycetes class. It is characterized by the infection of host tissues, leading to the formation of tumor-like growths known as galls. This parasite is specialized and primarily impacts the development of specific legume species by invading epidermal cells and hijacking their growth mechanisms.
The disease primarily affects the winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus), a significant tropical crop. Due to the rapid development of the pathogen, the entire plant can become stunted, leading to severe agricultural losses. The galls can cover stems, petioles, leaves, and pods, drastically altering the plant's morphology and physiological functions.
Clinical signs of the infection include the appearance of small, raised bumps or warts on the surface of the plant tissue. Over time, these galls increase in size and density, often merging together. The affected areas lose their ability to support photosynthesis effectively, leading to chlorosis, nutrient transport blockages, and potential plant death if the infection is widespread.
The development and spread of this disease are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, high rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The zoospores are highly mobile in water films, making irrigation or rainfall primary factors in transmitting the fungus between plants. Resting spores can remain in the soil for several years, acting as a reservoir for future infections.
Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to reduce the inoculum:
- Implementation of strict crop rotation practices to break the life cycle of the fungus.
- Selection of resistant cultivars, if available, for regional cultivation.
- Sanitation practices involving the removal and burning of symptomatic plant debris.
- Improving drainage and spacing to minimize humidity levels around the foliage.
- Timely application of chemical fungicides during the early stages of disease development.
