The organism primarily affects irrigation reservoirs, greenhouse water recycling systems, and fish farms. While it does not infect plants directly, its presence in irrigation water can negatively influence the quality of crops grown in soil-less media or hydroponic systems by introducing unwanted odors and organic contaminants into the nutrient solution.
The main symptoms of a bloom include a strong cucumber-like or fishy odor of the water, which becomes noticeable even at low concentrations. Visually, the water may appear brownish or yellowish, and in severe cases, thin oily-looking slicks form on the surface, which interferes with water filtration and irrigation equipment performance.
