Synurales are an order of golden-brown algae that often pose significant challenges in hydroponic crop production and irrigation systems. While they do not infect plant tissue like pathogenic fungi, their excessive growth negatively alters the aquatic environment, creating a stress-filled condition for greenhouse crops.

The causative agents are unicellular or colonial organisms characterized by a covering of siliceous scales. They affect the agricultural environment primarily through nutrient competition and the release of secondary metabolites. In high concentrations, these metabolic byproducts can inhibit root development and hinder the nutrient uptake capacity of plant roots.

The cultures most affected by these organisms are high-value greenhouse crops, including tomatoes, peppers, and various leafy greens grown in recirculating water systems. Common symptoms include the formation of a slimy, often golden or brown, film on the surface of the growing media, nutrient tanks, and irrigation pipes, leading to oxygen depletion at the root zone.

Development and spread are facilitated by high light intensity, warm water temperatures, and elevated levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the irrigation water. Once established in a plumbing system, they can spread rapidly through entire greenhouses, complicating water management and causing structural damage to irrigation emitters.

Prevention and protection strategies are essential for maintaining a healthy growing environment. Growers should focus on isolating light from nutrient reservoirs, employing advanced water filtration systems like UV sterilizers or ozonators, and practicing strict sanitation protocols for all irrigation equipment to prevent the recurrence of algae blooms.
