Synurophyceae are a class of golden-brown algae that can significantly affect agricultural operations by contaminating irrigation water sources. While they do not directly infect crops like fungi or bacteria, their proliferation in storage tanks and irrigation lines presents a significant challenge for modern agriculture.

These organisms are known for causing water quality issues, specifically in drip irrigation systems and hydroponic setups. They reproduce rapidly in water bodies with high nutrient levels, often originating from runoff from fertilized agricultural fields, which leads to eutrophication and subsequent algal blooms.

Symptoms of an infestation include the appearance of an unpleasant, fishy, or cucumber-like odor in the irrigation water and the physical presence of organic matter that can cloud the water. Under a microscope, their silica scales are the primary identifier, distinguishing them from other types of common freshwater algae.

Environmental conditions that favor their growth include moderate water temperatures and high nutrient availability, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen. In stagnant or slow-moving water, these conditions trigger rapid colonization, which can quickly overwhelm natural filtration systems in irrigation networks.
