Unlike plant pathogens that infect crops, this organism is primarily found in forest ecosystems where it interacts with various agarics, most notably species within the Collybia genus, impacting their reproductive cycle.
The causal agent is the basidiomycete fungus Syzygospora mycetophila. The disease is categorized as a mycophilous infection where the parasite establishes a parasitic relationship by embedding its hyphae into the host tissue. This intervention allows the parasite to absorb nutrients directly from the host, which leads to structural deformation and the eventual inhibition of host sporulation.
Symptoms of the infection are visible on the exterior of the host mushrooms. Infected specimens often exhibit irregular swelling, thickening, and overall distorted shapes of the pileus and stipe. A distinct white, powder-like mycelial layer often covers the infected surfaces, indicating active sporulation of the parasite. Over time, the host tissues soften and rot prematurely due to the parasitic degradation.
Development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are typically dispersed via air currents or by insect vectors moving between host mushrooms in damp, shaded habitats. Peak incidence usually coincides with periods of frequent rain, which provides the necessary moisture for rapid parasitic colonization.

From an agricultural perspective, while it does not affect conventional crops, it is considered a pest in commercial mushroom cultivation facilities.
