Syzygospora tumefaciens is a fascinating species of basidiomycetous fungi known for its unique ecological niche as a mycoparasite. Unlike typical plant pathogens that derive nutrients directly from host plants, this fungus specializes in attacking other fungi, specifically those that cause disease in vascular plants.
The primary hosts for Syzygospora tumefaciens are fungi belonging to the genus Exobasidium. These host fungi are notorious for causing leaf galls, hypertrophies, and tissue deformation on various Ericaceae species, including popular ornamental shrubs like rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as wild berries.
Signs of infestation are characterized by the alteration of existing galls. As the mycoparasite colonizes the Exobasidium colony, the original galls may become deformed, covered in a dense white fungal mat, or show signs of necrosis. This transformation is a direct result of the competitive inhibition and parasitic activity of Syzygospora.
The environmental conditions favoring the development of this fungus are strictly linked to high humidity and the presence of its host. It spreads through wind-dispersed basidiospores or rain splash, enabling it to track the distribution of Exobasidium throughout the growing season, particularly during moist spring weather.
