Tabanomycosis is a specialized fungal infection affecting Diptera, primarily horse flies (Tabanidae). Within the agricultural sector, this phenomenon is recognized as a form of natural biological regulation rather than a disease of crops, as the pathogen targets insects that negatively impact livestock health.
The causal agent is the Tabanomyces fungus, an entomopathogenic organism that completes its life cycle within the host insect. Upon contact, fungal spores germinate and penetrate the insect's cuticle, leading to systemic infection and the eventual death of the host, which serves as a substrate for further spore production.
Symptoms of the infection in insects include sluggish behavior, loss of flight ability, and the eventual emergence of fungal hyphae through the intersegmental membranes of the abdomen. No crop damage or plant symptoms are associated with this fungus, as it is strictly host-specific to certain insect groups.
Environmental conditions conducive to the spread of Tabanomyces include high relative humidity, adequate moisture, and moderate temperatures. These conditions favor the dispersal of conidia within fly populations, leading to localized epizootics that can significantly reduce biting fly pressure on grazing livestock.
The economic impact of this fungus is beneficial to agriculture by serving as a natural mortality factor for pests. Current research explores methods to integrate these fungi into integrated pest management (IPM) programs to minimize reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides in livestock farming environments.
