While it is widely recognized in scientific literature for its role as a biological control agent against various plant pathogens, under specific environmental conditions, it can infect plant roots, causing significant damage to the vascular system and root structure.
This pathogen affects a wide range of crops, including vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as several ornamental plants. Greenhouse environments are particularly vulnerable because the pathogen thrives in stable, warm conditions with high humidity, which can lead to rapid spread through the soil or substrate used for cultivation.
Symptoms of infection generally start with the wilting of leaves, which often progresses to chlorosis and stunted plant development. When inspecting the root system, one may observe brown lesions, softened root tissues, and a characteristic yellowish fungal growth that indicates the presence of the pathogen's sporulation phase on the decaying tissues.
