Pear leaf blister is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Taphrina bullata. This disease specifically affects the foliage of pear trees, leading to the distortion of leaf tissue and a reduction in the plant's overall photosynthetic efficiency, which weakens the tree's health and reduces its yield potential.
The fungus is highly host-specific, primarily targeting the genus Pyrus. It thrives in regions with temperate climates where cool, wet spring weather provides the necessary environment for the spores to germinate and penetrate the developing leaf tissues of the host tree.
The visual symptoms typically manifest as raised, blister-like spots on the leaves, often with a yellow or reddish tint. As the disease progresses, these blisters become hard, and a dusty layer of spores may appear on the underside of the leaf. Severe infections lead to premature leaf drop, which can significantly stress the tree and impact the quality of the harvest.
Disease development is heavily dependent on favorable environmental conditions. The spores overwinter on the bark or within bud scales and are spread primarily by rain and wind when temperatures rise in the early spring. Continuous moisture on the leaf surface is critical for the infection process to be successful.
