Hornbeam witch's broom is a distinct plant disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Taphrina carpini. This pathogen belongs to the genus Taphrina, known for inducing severe deformations in woody plants through the systemic colonization of host tissues.

The primary host for this fungus is the European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus). The pathogen infects the branch tissues, stimulating an abnormal proliferation of lateral buds and branches, which creates the dense, tangled masses commonly referred to as "witch's brooms."

The symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of numerous short, thin, and brittle shoots that emerge from a single localized area. The leaves on these infected branches are frequently curled, stunted, and exhibit discoloration. During the sporulation phase, a thin layer of fungal asci covers the leaf surface, which is a key diagnostic feature.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. High humidity and cool temperatures during the early spring stimulate spore germination and colonization of emerging tissues. The fungus survives the winter as mycelium within the dormant buds and bark, resuming its parasitic activity as soon as the host's vegetative growth begins.

The impact of this disease on the host is significant, as it leads to reduced growth, aesthetic decline, and eventual dieback of the infected branches. Management strategies focus on arboricultural practices rather than systemic chemical treatments:
