Description
The disease known as poplar leaf blister is caused by the fungus Taphrina populina. This ascomycete fungus acts as a specialized parasite, targeting various poplar species and inducing abnormal growth in host tissues, which results in characteristic leaf curling and blistering.
The fungus predominantly affects various members of the Populus genus, including black and hybrid poplars. The infection typically targets the leaves, disrupting their normal development immediately after they emerge from buds in the early spring period.
Visible symptoms include the formation of irregular, yellowish or reddish blisters on the leaf surface. As the fungus matures, a powdery greyish layer of spores covers the underside of these blisters, eventually leading to leaf browning, shriveling, and premature senescence.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. High humidity and cool, wet spring weather favor spore germination and penetration into the plant tissues. The pathogen typically overwinters in the cracks of the tree bark and on bud scales, ready to reinfect new growth.
The impact of this disease on tree health is significant, as severe defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the poplar. Repeated annual infections can lead to general tree decline, branch dieback, and reduced resistance to environmental stressors.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include the removal and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate inoculum sources, as well as the pruning of heavily infected branches. Fungicide treatments, particularly copper-based sprays applied during the dormant season, can help suppress the fungal population.
