Taphrina sadebeckii is a parasitic ascomycete fungus that acts as the causal agent of a specific leaf disease affecting alder trees (Alnus species). It is a well-known pathogen within the genus Taphrina, often causing significant foliage symptoms that appear primarily during the spring and early summer seasons.

The primary hosts for this fungus are black alder (Alnus glutinosa) and grey alder (Alnus incana). The pathogen specifically targets developing leaves, causing hypertrophy and hyperplasia in the infected tissues, which results in the formation of distinctive patches or galls on the leaf surface.

Symptoms begin as small, pale-yellowish or chlorotic spots on the leaf blade. As the infection progresses, these areas expand and may turn brown or necrotic. During the peak of the infection cycle, a delicate, white, powdery layer consisting of fungal asci can be observed on the underside of the leaves, indicating active spore production.

The development and spread of Taphrina sadebeckii are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, heavy rainfall, and cool temperatures during the bud-burst phase. The fungus overwinters as dormant mycelium or spores within the bud scales or bark crevices, emerging when conditions become favorable for infection in the new season.

The economic and ecological impact of this disease is linked to premature defoliation, which reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity and can lead to growth decline over time if the tree is heavily infested. Effective management strategies include the following:

  • Sanitation, including the collection and disposal of fallen leaves to reduce local inoculum sources.
