Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Taphrina ulmi, an ascomycete pathogen that specifically targets elm species. This parasite alters the host's hormonal balance, leading to cell proliferation, tissue hypertrophy, and the characteristic deformation of the leaf blades.

The primary host for this fungus is the Elm (genus Ulmus). While it rarely kills adult trees directly, severe infections can significantly stress young saplings and nursery stock, reducing their overall vigor and aesthetic value in landscape plantings.

Symptoms appear early in the growing season, characterized by irregular, discolored spots on the leaves. As the fungus progresses, these areas become thickened and distorted, causing the entire leaf to curl, blister, or fold. In severe cases, these leaves turn brown and drop prematurely, resulting in sparse foliage.

The development of Taphrina ulmi is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly cool and wet weather during the bud break period. High humidity facilitates the germination of overwintering spores, which are then dispersed by wind and splashing rain to infect newly emerging leaves.

The economic and ecological damage is linked to the loss of photosynthetic capacity and increased susceptibility to other biotic stressors. Management and control methods include:

  • Sanitation, which involves collecting and destroying fallen leaves to reduce the primary inoculum.
  • Proper crown thinning to ensure adequate air circulation and reduce humidity levels.
  • Applying preventive copper-based fungicide sprays before the buds begin to open in spring.
  • Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and stress reduction to support natural defenses.
