The order Taphrinales represents a group of pathogenic fungi responsible for severe plant diseases, most notably peach leaf curl. These organisms are obligate parasites that induce dramatic physiological changes in host tissues, such as hypertrophy, where cells increase in size, and hyperplasia, leading to excessive cell division.
The primary hosts for these fungi are stone fruits, including peach, nectarine, and cherry trees, as well as various wild trees like alder and birch. The fungus overwinters as yeast-like spores on the bark surfaces and within the crevices of tree buds, waiting for optimal environmental conditions to initiate a new infection cycle.
Infection symptoms usually appear early in the season, characterized by curled, thickened, and distorted leaves that often turn yellow or reddish. As the infection progresses, the leaves become brittle and drop prematurely, while the undersides of the leaf surfaces develop a fine, powdery coating consisting of fungal asci and ascospores.
The development and spread of Taphrinales are heavily dictated by weather patterns, specifically cool, wet spring conditions. Prolonged rainfall and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C facilitate the rapid dispersal of spores via splashing water and wind, allowing them to penetrate newly emerging vegetative tissues.
The economic impact is substantial, as repeated yearly infections weaken the tree's vigor, drastically reduce fruit yield, and increase susceptibility to other stressors. Effective orchard management requires timely prophylactic fungicide applications, typically performed in late autumn or early spring before bud swell, to prevent the initial infection from taking hold.
