The Tarzetta cup fungus (Tarzetta catinus) is a species of fungus in the Pyronemataceae family. Its presence is often indicative of specific environmental conditions that may predispose plants to other, more aggressive pathogens.
The fungus functions as a pathogen by competing with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizosphere. By colonizing the root zone, the mycelium disrupts the natural nutrient uptake mechanism of the plant.
