Description
The Teloschistaceae family comprises various species of lichens, which are often mistakenly classified as plant pathogens or diseases by gardeners. From an agronomic perspective, these are symbiotic organisms that utilize tree bark merely as a substrate for attachment, rather than acting as true parasites that feed on plant tissues.
These organisms predominantly colonize weakened, aging, or overcrowded fruit trees such as apple, pear, and stone fruits. They thrive in areas of the bark where growth processes have slowed, and where high humidity combined with sufficient sunlight allows for the photosynthesis of their symbiotic algal partners.
Symptoms appear as vivid yellow, orange, or reddish crusts, rosettes, or scale-like structures on trunks and scaffold branches. While they do not directly invade the vascular system, their extensive growth can trap moisture against the bark, creating a microhabitat that encourages the colonization of pests like scale insects and mites.
Conditions favorable for their development include poor orchard hygiene, lack of annual pruning, and consistently high humidity. The presence of these lichens often serves as an indicator of an overall decline in tree vigor, suggesting that the host plant may be under stress and requires better nutrient management and renewal.
Protective measures focus on mechanical removal of the crust during the dormant season using stiff brushes or scrapers. Follow-up treatments with 3–5% ferrous sulfate solution are highly effective for sanitation. Ensuring proper pruning to improve light penetration and airflow is the most sustainable way to prevent the regrowth of these epiphytes.
