The genus Tephrocybe belongs to the Lyophyllaceae family. While many species are known as saprotrophs that decompose organic matter, some can act as pathogens affecting plant root systems under favorable conditions. The disease is primarily caused by mycelial growth that penetrates the roots and disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant.
This pathogen typically affects a range of crops, including vegetables, cereals, and nursery stock. It thrives in soils characterized by heavy accumulation of decaying plant material, which acts as a reservoir for the fungus. Agricultural systems with poor drainage are particularly susceptible to the development of this pathogen.
Symptoms of the infection include chlorosis, stunted growth, and a gradual wilting of the plant. A characteristic sign of the infection is the presence of grayish or white mycelium on the roots and root collar. As the disease progresses, the root tissue softens, undergoes decay, and eventually fails, leading to plant mortality.
The development of Tephrocybe is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus spreads through spores dispersed by wind, water, and mechanical contact with contaminated soil or tools. Inadequate crop rotation and leaving infected debris in the field after harvest significantly increase the inoculum load for the following season.
To prevent and control the disease, growers should prioritize field sanitation, including the removal or deep incorporation of plant debris. Implementing diverse crop rotations, improving soil drainage, and utilizing fungicides for soil treatment in heavily infested areas are essential strategies to mitigate the impact of this fungal infection on agricultural yields.
