Tephromela atra is a common species of lichen belonging to the Tephromelataceae family. In an agricultural context, it is typically considered an epiphytic organism rather than a primary pathogen. It colonizes the bark of trees and rocky substrates, utilizing the tree merely as a physical support system rather than as a nutrient source.
The organism is a symbiotic association between a fungus and algae. While it does not extract nutrients from the host plant, it acts as a bio-indicator. The presence of dense lichen growth often suggests that the tree is growing slowly, lacks sufficient light, or is suffering from poor overall vitality, which often occurs in neglected or old orchards.
A wide variety of woody plants can be hosts for Tephromela atra, including fruit-bearing trees like apples, pears, and plums, as well as several deciduous forest species. The colonization is most aggressive on trees that have stopped growing rapidly and have a rough, stable bark surface that allows the lichen to attach itself firmly over several years.

If left unmanaged, these patches create a micro-environment that holds moisture against the bark, which can eventually promote the development of wood-rotting fungi and provide hiding spots for pest larvae.
