Terana is a fungal disease caused by saprotrophic and weakly parasitic fungi of the genus Terana. In an agronomic context, this pathogen represents a group of wood-decaying basidiomycetes that, under specific conditions, can colonize woody debris and weakened tissues of agricultural crops, manifesting as a distinctive, bright-colored mycelial growth.
The pathogen is primarily categorized as a wood-decay fungus. While its life cycle is mainly associated with organic matter decomposition, under high-humidity conditions, the mycelium can transition to living plant tissues, causing surface physiological suppression and disrupting metabolic processes in epidermal cells, making this disease a specific challenge for nurseries and orchards.
The main crops susceptible to infestation include fruit trees, shrubs, and forest species. The infection typically localizes on the bark, branches, and areas with mechanical wood damage. Weakened plants experiencing stress due to drought or physical injury become the most vulnerable targets for the colonization of this fungus.
The primary symptoms of infestation include the appearance of a characteristic intense blue or bluish coating on the surface of affected areas. As the disease progresses, bark necrosis, tissue cracking, and general plant decline are observed, leading to premature leaf drop and decreased crop productivity in subsequent growing seasons.
The conditions for disease development are directly dependent on the hydrothermal regime. High relative humidity (over 80%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius facilitate active spore germination. Stagnant moisture in tree canopies and lack of aeration create an ideal environment for the epiphytotic spread of fungal spores.
Protection strategies include a combination of agrotechnical and chemical measures:
- Sanitary pruning and removal of affected branches.
- Disinfection of wounds using grafting wax or copper-based preparations.
- Humidity control within nurseries and orchards.
- Application of broad-spectrum fungicides in cases of widespread infection.
