Description
Cobalt crust fungus (Terana caerulea) is a conspicuous species of fungus belonging to the Phanerochaetaceae family. While it primarily functions as a saprotrophic organism, breaking down dead wood, its presence can indicate a decline in tree health. It is commonly found on decaying logs and standing dead wood of deciduous trees, playing a significant role in forest ecology.
The fungus targets a wide range of deciduous hosts, including beech, oak, and hazel. While it prefers dead organic matter, it can spread to the wounded or weakened bark of living trees. This encroachment can accelerate the decline of stressed trees by facilitating the colonization of wood-decaying organisms into the heartwood and sapwood.
The most distinctive symptom is the vibrant blue or deep cobalt-colored mat of mycelium on the bark surface. These fruiting bodies are resupinate, meaning they lie flat against the substrate. As the infection progresses, the underlying wood becomes soft and brittle, losing its structural integrity. The visual contrast of the bright blue growth against the brown bark makes it easily identifiable.
Environmental factors such as high humidity, shade, and poor airflow are critical for the growth and reproduction of Terana caerulea. Spores are dispersed through the air and settle on damp surfaces, where they germinate. Periods of prolonged rain or high dew point facilitate the expansion of the fungal mat across the bark, especially on the north-facing sides of tree trunks.
To protect valuable trees, it is essential to prioritize good arboricultural practices. Preventive measures include the removal of deadwood, which acts as a primary reservoir for spores, and proper pruning to ensure adequate light and air circulation. If localized infections appear on healthy specimens, the bark should be cleaned, and appropriate fungicide treatments should be applied to prevent further systemic penetration.
