The pathogen responsible for this condition is the ascomycete fungus Teratosphaeria epicoccoides, formerly known in literature as Kirramyces epicoccoides. This organism specifically targets various species of the Eucalyptus genus, causing a disease commonly known as leaf spot. It functions as a parasitic fungus that disrupts the normal photosynthetic activity of host leaves.
The primary hosts of this fungus are various species of Eucalyptus trees grown in plantations and native forests. Younger plants and nursery seedlings are particularly susceptible to the infection, often experiencing the most severe damage. The fungus is widely recognized in regions with high humidity, which provide an optimal environment for its life cycle.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of leaf spots that are often circular to irregular in shape. Initially, these spots may appear as small lesions, but they can enlarge and coalesce over time, resulting in necrotic patches of brown or grayish color. Microscopic examination of these spots reveals the presence of fungal fruiting bodies appearing as small black specks.
The development and spread of Teratosphaeria epicoccoides are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity levels, rainfall, and moderate temperatures facilitate the germination of conidia.
