Teratosphaeria macowanii is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing leaf spot diseases in various Eucalyptus species. As an ascomycete fungus, it plays a significant role in the health of both native Eucalyptus forests and commercial timber plantations, particularly in temperate and subtropical regions.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are Eucalyptus trees, with juvenile leaves often being the most susceptible to infection. The fungus can persist in the environment, utilizing fallen leaf litter as a reservoir for inoculum, which allows the disease to re-emerge during favorable conditions every growing season.
Symptoms typically present as distinct necrotic lesions on the leaf surface, which can coalesce to cover large areas of the foliage.
