Teratosphaeria maculiformis is a fungal pathogen classified as an ascomycete that causes significant foliage damage in various Eucalyptus species. This disease is widely recognized for forming necrotic leaf spots, which impair the photosynthetic capacity of the host trees, leading to reduced growth and overall weakening of the forest stands.
The host range is primarily restricted to members of the Eucalyptus genus. While mature trees can be affected, the disease is particularly concerning in nurseries and young plantations where high humidity and limited spacing create a conducive environment for the rapid establishment and spread of the pathogen.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, scattered spots on the leaves that expand over time. These spots turn dark brown or grey and often show a chlorotic halo. As the disease progresses, the central parts of the spots may host fungal fruiting bodies, and severely infected leaves often abscise prematurely, leading to canopy thinning.
The development and spread of Teratosphaeria maculiformis are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity levels, rainfall, and moderate temperatures are the most critical factors triggering spore release and germination. Poor air circulation within the canopy of dense plantations exacerbates the intensity of the outbreak, allowing the pathogen to persist throughout the growing season.

Key strategies include the selection of resistant Eucalyptus genotypes during reforestation efforts and maintaining appropriate stand density to promote airflow. Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying highly infected plant material, help to reduce the primary inoculum load within the area. In high-value forestry settings, chemical interventions may be considered if environmental conditions remain favorable for the pathogen.
