Description

Teratosphaeria molleriana is a significant fungal pathogen known to cause severe leaf spot disease in various Eucalyptus species. This Ascomycete fungus is a major concern for commercial forestry, as it leads to widespread defoliation, resulting in reduced photosynthetic capacity and stunted growth of affected timber stands.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are trees belonging to the Eucalyptus genus. While mature trees can be affected, the disease is particularly devastating in young plantations or nurseries where dense planting and high humidity create a favorable environment for the rapid colonization of the fungus on young, vulnerable foliage.

Symptoms are characterized by the development of leaf lesions that transition from small chlorotic spots to larger, dark brown or necrotic necrotic areas with distinct margins. As the infection progresses, the underside of the leaf often displays small, dark fungal fruiting bodies, which are crucial for the diagnostic identification of the disease in the field.

Development and spread of Teratosphaeria molleriana are heavily dependent on climatic conditions. Prolonged wet weather, rainfall, and moderate temperatures facilitate the dispersal of spores, which are splashed onto healthy leaves or carried by wind currents.
