Description
Teratosphaeria nubilosa is a pathogenic fungus responsible for severe leaf spot disease in various Eucalyptus species. As an ascomycete pathogen, it is particularly devastating to juvenile foliage, causing significant economic losses in commercial forestry operations. The disease is widely recognized as a major limiting factor for growing susceptible Eucalyptus species in regions with mild, humid climates.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens. The fungus specifically attacks the young leaves, causing lesions that eventually lead to premature defoliation. Repeated infections stunt the growth of young trees and can significantly reduce the overall biomass production of a plantation, making the management of this disease critical for forest productivity.
Initial symptoms include small spots on the leaf blades that gradually expand, turning dark brown or gray. These lesions are frequently surrounded by a yellow chlorotic halo, a typical response of the host plant. On the surface of these necrotic spots, tiny black fruiting bodies (pycnidia) become visible, indicating the presence of fungal spore production. Severe infections lead to curling and dropping of leaves, leaving branches bare.
The spread of Teratosphaeria nubilosa is strongly favored by cool and wet environmental conditions. Spores are disseminated via rain splash and wind, making wet springs and mild autumns peak periods for infection. Temperatures between 15°C and 20°C are optimal for spore germination and colonization of host tissues. Extended periods of fog and dew contribute significantly to the rapid development of the disease within a stand.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Utilizing genetically resistant or tolerant Eucalyptus provenances for planting.
- Implementing appropriate spacing in plantations to improve air circulation and reduce humidity levels.
- Sanitation pruning or removal of heavily infected saplings in nurseries to reduce spore load.
- Application of specialized fungicides if economic thresholds are reached in valuable nurseries.
- Continuous monitoring of foliage health during critical periods of susceptible leaf growth.
