The fungus Teratosphaeria zuluensis is a serious foliar pathogen that primarily affects species of the genus Eucalyptus. It is recognized as one of the most significant constraints on the commercial cultivation of fast-growing eucalypts in various regions of the world, leading to substantial economic losses.

The host range is predominantly limited to Eucalyptus species, specifically those susceptible to the pathogen's colonisation of juvenile and adult foliage. Young trees, particularly in plantations and forest nurseries, are most prone to severe outbreaks due to their stage of development and environmental conditions.

Visible symptoms include the development of small, chlorotic lesions on the leaves, which expand and transition into necrotic, brown-to-black spots. These lesions are frequently surrounded by a distinct halo. In severe cases, extensive defoliation occurs, leading to the dieback of shoots and stunted overall growth of the tree.

The fungus thrives in warm and humid conditions, which are ideal for spore germination and infection. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for the dissemination of conidia. In densely planted monoculture stands, the microclimate often traps moisture, facilitating the rapid build-up of the pathogen population.
