Description
The Teratosphaeriaceae family encompasses a group of ascomycetous fungi recognized as significant plant pathogens. These fungi are primarily responsible for leaf spot diseases that affect various tree species, most notably within the Eucalyptus genus, causing severe defoliation and growth reduction in managed plantations.
These pathogens predominantly infect members of the Myrtaceae family. By colonizing the leaf tissue, the fungi disrupt the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to stunted growth, loss of vigor, and in severe cases, the death of young saplings or weakened trees.
Typical symptoms of infection include the development of necrotic lesions on leaf surfaces. These spots often vary in size and color, ranging from chlorotic yellowing to dark brown or black necrotic tissue. Under high humidity, fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge, appearing as microscopic dark dots on the lesions, which are crucial for the spread of the pathogen.
The development and dispersal of Teratosphaeriaceae are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Moisture on the leaf surface is essential for spore germination. Once established, spores are efficiently disseminated by wind currents and rain splash, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly throughout dense forest stands.
