Terminal stunt is a severe disease affecting cotton plants, typically transmitted by members of the Cicadellidae family, commonly known as leafhoppers. The disease disrupts normal plant growth, specifically targeting the apical meristem, which leads to stunted development and significant yield reduction in cotton-growing regions.

The causative agents of terminal stunt are usually phytoplasmas or viruses, which are introduced into the plant tissues by leafhoppers during their feeding process. Once the pathogen enters the vascular system, it spreads rapidly throughout the plant, interfering with nutrient translocation and hormonal regulation.

Characteristic symptoms include the shortening of internodes at the plant's terminal, resulting in a bushy or stunted appearance.
