Peanut nematode

The causative agent of this disease is the microscopic nematode Aphelenchoides arachidis, an obligate endoparasite that specifically targets plant tissues. It is recognized as a significant pest in peanut cultivation, capable of inflicting severe damage to the reproductive structures of the plant.

The primary host crop for this pathogen is the groundnut or peanut (Arachis hypogaea). The nematodes invade the pods during their developmental stages, colonizing both the pod shell and the surface of the seeds, which effectively turns the harvested yield into a source of future field infestation.

It persists in the soil and contaminated plant debris, waiting for the right conditions to migrate toward the developing roots and young pods of the next crop cycle.
