While typically saprotrophic, it can exhibit opportunistic pathogenic behavior on plants, especially in agricultural systems characterized by waterlogging or suboptimal drainage conditions.
The fungus produces distinctive tetraradiate conidia, which facilitate its dispersal in water-saturated environments. In an agricultural context, if fields become saturated for prolonged periods, these spores can migrate to the root zone of crops, leading to colonization of root tissues and interference with plant physiology.
Crops most susceptible to damage from this pathogen include those grown in heavy or poorly drained soils, as well as plants in hydroponic systems if water quality is not properly managed. The pathogen primarily targets the root hairs and young roots, limiting the plant's ability to absorb water and vital minerals.
