While primarily aquatic, these organisms can cause significant damage to plant tissues, particularly in hydroponic systems where oxygen levels are low and organic waste accumulates.
The causative agent belongs to the phylum Ciliophora. The disease is characterized as an invasive infection, typically occurring as a secondary complication. It often exploits existing wounds on the root system or colonizes necrotic tissue that has been weakened by other stressors, such as temperature fluctuations or nutrient deficiencies.
