Description
Tetrahymenid infection refers to the pathogenic activity of ciliated protozoa from the Tetrahymenidae family on plant tissues. While commonly found in aquatic environments as bacteria-eaters, certain species can behave as facultative parasites, causing significant damage to plants cultivated in hydroponic and aquaponic systems.
The causative agent is primarily the genus Tetrahymena. These single-celled organisms exploit compromised host defenses to colonize root tissues. Their pathogenicity is linked to the production of proteolytic enzymes that facilitate the breakdown of plant cell walls, leading to rapid tissue necrosis and systemic decline of the plant.
Crops most susceptible to this condition include greenhouse vegetables and hydroponically grown greens. The infection usually spreads through contaminated water circulation systems, where the protozoa can multiply rapidly. Poor aeration and high levels of organic matter in the nutrient solution provide ideal conditions for their proliferation and attack on host roots.
Visual symptoms often manifest as a sudden loss of turgor in the leaves and browning of the root system. In advanced stages, roots may exhibit a slimy texture accompanied by an unpleasant odor. As the plant loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients, it enters a state of irreversible wilting, which is frequently misidentified as root rot caused by fungi or oomycetes.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach focused on rigorous sanitation. Growers should prioritize the sterilization of nutrient solutions using UV light, ozone, or hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, regular monitoring of the hydroponic water quality is essential to detect the presence of ciliates before they reach pathogenic concentrations. Maintaining proper oxygenation levels in the root zone also discourages the colonization of plant tissues by these organisms.
