Thalassiosira is a genus of centric diatoms that plays a significant role in marine and freshwater ecology. While not a classical plant disease pathogen, it acts as a competitor in aquatic farming systems, where it can be treated as a nuisance organism that compromises the health of aquatic crops and controlled water environments.

As a biological entity, Thalassiosira consists of single cells with siliceous frustules. They reproduce rapidly through vegetative division, especially in nutrient-rich environments. This rapid proliferation often leads to water blooms, which physically and chemically alter the growth conditions for other aquatic species.

The primary crops affected are those cultivated in aquaponic systems or specialized aquatic nurseries. In these environments, an overgrowth of Thalassiosira reduces water clarity, which hinders light penetration for submerged plants, and rapidly depletes necessary nutrients, leading to growth stunting and physiological stress in target crops.

Symptoms of an overgrowth include a brownish discoloration of the water, accumulation of diatomaceous films on roots and submerged equipment, and nocturnal oxygen depletion caused by heavy respiration. If left unchecked, this competitive pressure can significantly reduce the overall yield of an aquatic farming operation.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • Optimizing nutrient dosing to prevent spikes that trigger algal blooms;
