In the context of intensive agriculture and hydroponics, these organisms are considered important indicators of water quality, and their excessive proliferation can lead to competition with cultivated plants for essential nutrients.

The biological nature of these organisms involves rapid photosynthetic activity. In artificial water environments, they function as competitors, rapidly consuming nitrogen and phosphorus that are intended for plant nutrition, thus slowing down the development of hydroponic crops.

Crops grown in aqueous environments, such as lettuce, herbs, and certain vegetables in NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) systems, are most prone to these interactions. When these algae coat the inner walls of circulation pipes and root zones, they can cause physical clogging and alter the local chemical environment.

Environmental conditions that favor the development of Thalassiosirales include exposure to direct sunlight, high temperatures, and high concentrations of nutrients. These factors trigger bloom cycles, which can be detrimental if not managed correctly within an enclosed growing facility.
