Thecaphora alsinearum is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Ustilaginales, commonly known as smut fungi. This fungus acts as an obligate parasite, primarily targeting members of the Caryophyllaceae family, with a significant preference for the genus Stellaria (chickweed).
The disease is classified as a smut, affecting the reproductive organs of the host plant. The fungus invades the ovaries and floral tissues, transforming the developing seeds into a powdery mass of dark-brown teliospores. This transformation prevents the plant from producing viable offspring, effectively sterilizing the infected reproductive structures.
Symptoms are most visible during the flowering stage. Infected flowers often fail to open correctly, showing swelling or distortion. When the seed capsule is opened or ruptures, it releases a dark, dusty cloud of fungal spores instead of typical seeds. This characteristic sign confirms the presence of the pathogen within the plant tissues.
The development and spread of Thecaphora alsinearum are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spores are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and sometimes insect activity.
