This pathogen primarily targets specific plant species within the Caryophyllaceae family, most notably the Cerastium (mouse-ear chickweed) genus, where it acts as a systemic or localized parasite affecting the floral reproductive structures.
The fungus is highly specialized in its host selection and developmental cycle. After infecting the host plant, the pathogen colonizes the ovary tissue. Through metabolic interaction, it replaces the normal development of seeds with a dense mass of dark, powdery teliospores. This effectively sterilizes the plant, preventing successful reproduction and seed dispersal.
Symptoms become visible during the maturation of the host's fruit capsules. Infected capsules appear deformed, swollen, or stunted compared to healthy ones. When the capsule wall eventually ruptures, it reveals a dark, dusty mass of spores instead of viable seeds.
